Impact of the economic crisis on international migration
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article focuses on the economic crises, the acting factors of influence on the international migration process. The effect of the energy crisis of 70s of XX century, Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998, the financial crisis of 2008-2009 on the turns in migration trends is researched. The possible changes in the external migration from Ukraine due to the crisis processes of 2008-2009 and 2013-2014 years are considered.
Influenced by 1970s energy crisis, migration flows to developed European region started to grow every year despite the tough immigration policy. They were strengthened by persons arriving on the right of family reunification, refugees and migrants that were taken on humanitarian positions. The economic crisis of 1997-1998 demonstrated that migration contributes to its overcoming. Maintaining an open labor market for migrants in the countries of the Asia-Pacific region has stimulated economic activity as a result of movement of labor, helped to create jobs and thus played an important role in overcoming the economic downturn and accelerated economic growth in the post-crisis period. During the financial crisis of 2008-2009 restrictive migration policies of countries did not bring the desired result, as the main factors driving migration have not changed.
If the crisis of the previous years had minor effect on changing of population migratory attitudes, under the influence of modern social and economic decline in Ukraine the potentially significant migration outflow of population can be formed.
