Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction. The article reveals the main problems of development of small and medium-sized businesses, analyses foreign and domestic experience of increasing the competitiveness of enterprises. It has been established that one of the important opportunities for the development of small and medium-sized businesses is their digitalisation, introduction of the latest technologies, which provides many opportunities not only to use the established business models, but also to design them taking into account the specifics of the industry or production. It is found that the sustainability of small and medium-sized enterprises in the business environment is determined by skilful risk management and control of the consequences of innovation. The main directions of integration of Ukrainian small and medium-sized businesses into the European space are outlined.
Purpose. The purpose of this article is to analyze the domestic and international experience in the development of small and medium-sized businesses, to identify the key problems that hinder their functioning in Ukraine, and to systematize scientific approaches to overcoming these barriers in the context of global economic challenges and trends.
Results. The article examines the structural role of SMEs in the economy, evaluates the main challenges faced by Ukrainian entrepreneurs, and explores international practices regarding sustainability, digitalization, risk management, and business model innovation. A comparative analysis of foreign case studies highlights potential solutions that could be adapted to Ukraine's business environment. Particular attention is paid to the role of state support, human capital, and access to finance in ensuring long-term resilience and integration into the European economic space.
Originality. The scientific novelty lies in the proposed systematization of global scientific approaches for enhancing SME development under the conditions of the Ukrainian economy, with consideration of current geopolitical, social, and technological transformations.
Conclusion. The development of the SME sector in Ukraine requires a comprehensive, research-based strategy that integrates international best practices with national economic and institutional reforms. Strengthening SMEs will contribute to economic growth, innovation, and the creation of a competitive business environment.
